Truthfully, gearheads know this better than anyone thanks to painfully expensive lows that make us question both our sanity and our commitment to the sport. Maybe it was an ever-elusive dyno number, a hard-to-get e. In truth, it all started innocently enough with lunchtime shoptalk that quickly ignited into all-out bench racing. In an instant, an idea was born, the challenge was made, and we immediately questioned our own judgment.
How much would it make on 6 psi? How about 8 or even 12 psi? Before putting the cart before the horse, we consulted with the godfathers of old-school Southern California horsepower at Vrbancic Brothers Racing. Bob and George have been building big power pushrod engines for decades, and to say they know a thing or two would be an understatement.
According to BluePrint, customer feedback drives the design, development, and engineering of their products. Our particular example is the BPCT1; a boost-friendly, aluminum-headed, roller cam BluePrint explained that it was designed with forced-induction as the end result. But knowing that many enthusiasts add modifications in stages, they massaged the combo to make a stout hp and lb-ft without the aid of boost.

George Vrbancic is the man at the helm of the dyno. Any higher and the supplied valvesprings produced valve float. It liked 33 degrees of total timing, an AFR in the 12s, and 5, rpm; anything higher and the stock springs would cause valve float.
But power is only part of the equation, as the stroker produced a pancake flat torque curve with over lb-ft from 3, rpm upward. As anyone will tell you, torque is what moves street cars. Since we planned on running it with the same pulley ratios, it would make for an interesting comparison to see if the difference in power naturally aspirated carried over under boost. We were also interested to see how the boost pressure reading from the larger engine compared against the 6. Before we could perform any testing, we needed a dyno engine, then the two superchargers, then plenty of sleepless nights dreaming about the wonders of boost!

Capable of supporting hp, the D-1SC was installed using the supplied blower mounting and tensioner brackets. ProCharger supplied a number of different blower pulleys and the required 7. Having limited experience with this supercharged LSX we started with the most conservative, the 4. This turned out to be a good choice for theas the combination produced a peak boost pressure of 9. Lest you think the boost was a tad on the low side, the D-1SC combination produced hp and lb-ft of torque. Rather than try a different blower pulley, we installed the larger air-to-air intercooler supplied with the F-1A supercharger.
The high-flow intercooler increased boost pressure to the engine with no change in pulley diameter and allowed the LSX to top the 1,hp mark with peak numbers of 1, hp and lb-ft of torque!
The D-1SC was just the appetizer. The main course was the larger, more powerful F-1A supercharger. According to ProCharger, the F-1A flowed 1, cfm and was capable of 38 psi and 1, hp. Having exceeded the peak rating of the D-1SC by more than 75 hp, we were anxious to see if the F-1A followed suit. The self-contained nature of the F-1A meant hookup was a breeze, especially since the unit uses the same brackets as the D-1SC and even the P-1SC, which makes upgrading easier and less expensive.
We did take the liberty of increasing the injector size to pound Accel units before installing the larger intercooler and blow-off valve.
Starting with the 4. Looking for a touch more power, we replaced the 4. The result was an increase of roughly 2 psi of boost and a jump in power to 1, hp and 1, lb-ft of torque. Using the ProCharger supercharger, we nearly doubled the power output of our already powerful LSX, which proves that everything is better with boost!

Blower engines typically receive a drop in static compression, which works well under boost, but definitely gives up some off-boost power.
Rather than choose a specific path, we decided to build a combination that worked well in all three configurations, essentially capable of supplying multipurpose power. After running a naturally aspirated engine, enthusiasts start to want more. Adding more power to any combination is as easy as placing a call to the guys at NOS.
No matter what engine you add it to, nitrous oxide makes a huge improvement. Any time you increase the power output by, or even or more horsepower you're going to like it. The problem becomes, just like with a naturally aspirated engine, the extra power provided by the nitrous just won't be enough after a time.
Luckily, nitrous kits are adjustable so more power is easily attainable.
But what if you want even more power? That's when boost comes into play. Adding a supercharger, like a ProCharger, to your combo can yield more power, and like the nitrous is easily adjustable for even greater gains.
Of course, this all assumes your engine is capable of withstanding the extra power and that the naturally aspirated combination responds well to both the nitrous and supercharger. Big assumptions. To ensure our build responded well to both nitrous and boost we made sure the engine met two critical conditions: increased internal strength and plenty of power.
Upping strength of the internal components was a no-brainer since the crank, rods, and pistons must be up to the task of withstanding the extra power production offered by nitrous or boost.
This obviously necessitated forged internals. To maximize power production we assembled a combination capable of producing plenty of power even before hitting it with the NOS Cheater nitrous system or the ProCharger supercharger. Milwaukee is currently the brushless power tool leader, and offers a range of M12 and M18 Fuel drills and drivers. New brushless saws, a grinder, and heavy duty impacts are coming soon.
Other brands are pushing the brushless envelope further, such as Makita with their automatic down-shifting impact driver. Expect to see new brushless drills and drivers from other brands this Fall. With their premium cordless drill and hammer drill, the emphasis seems to be more on power and the 3-speed gearbox. Current 20V Max premium drill users who want more runtime are probably more likely to upgrade to a higher capacity battery than to upgrade their still-relatively-new tools.
I would even bet that prototypes have been developed and are currently being tested. Although, they probably already are losing market share to Milwaukee. Brushless is too big of an influential marketing keyword for brands to ignore. Milwaukee pushed the boundary, and Dewalt and other brands will have to respond accordingly. Otherwise their brushed-motor cordless tools will look stale and outdated to users accustomed to be seeing heavy marketing that lauds the benefit of brushless motors.
