Is there a specific program software that i need to have in order to do this - what software do i need?
Thanks is advance! Remove Advertisements. I didn't even have to take it apart or remove it at all. The sensor is basically a potentiometer like how the old radios uses it for the volume control. If you had one that was dirty you would hear static when you adjust the volume. So basically that is what the sensor is doing too.
The poteniometer gets oxidize and you will get a fault when the computer doesn't read the resistance from the sensor. You should be able to clean it and may not even need to reprogram it. I sprayed it on the outside and around the sensor and turn the steering to work in the liquid.
You can go to ebay to get the spray. If you need the tool to recalibrate the SAS. It is useful to have the tool because you can watch the live data on the sensor while you turn the steering. You can see that the sesnor skips the resistance reading.

Have just turned into my road and the car beeped at me and is now showing the DSC and brake warning light in amber. The manual doesn't say a fat lot and Google will be my next call but would also appreciate any advice on what it could be?
Didn't do the diy myself. Worth noting afaik your dsc and dtc won't be working while the lights are on. Someone with more knowledge than me will add to this, I'm sure. Fox- 13, posts months.
It could be an absolute myriad of different things - some requiring a simple reset of the fault codes, some requiring a replacement DSC hydro unit. Without looking at the codes its pretty hard to say. Totally get what you're saying Fox, it's like a needle in a haystack without a fault code.
TheEnd 15, posts months. I'll take a guess at 5E20 pressure sensor 1. There are two screwed into the master cyl on E46s, both the same but an inch or so apart. Is the steering straight? I ask because my e46 gave same warning lamps when a failed rear trailing arm bush cocked the steering.
I've done a fair bit of research into this recently. There are also a few recent threads regarding the same issue within the M Power forum. Pressure sensors failed. DSC unit failure. On mine the pressure sensors are intermittent an will get them both replaced later this month. The easiest way to diagnose the issue is get the codes read. Come back on here with the info, or alternately put the code into Google and you'll get a host of info.

I've had this pop up twice in my 2 years of having my E Turned off the engine, turned it back on and it was gone. I got the codes read and it turned out to be steering wheel sensor that threw up the error.
Didn't see it again for about 18 months, then it came on again. Turned off the engine, and turned it on again and haven't seen in in nearly 6 months.
Sometimes sensors just throw up anomalous errors - i would monitor it for a while and if it doesn't come back on - put it down to a anomalous reading. There's no point going balls out and paying hundreds of pounds to a dealer if it was just a sensor error.
But the problem is how does the OP know if it's a dicky sensor or not? If you're on friendly terms with your dealer, they may read the codes for free.Braking is applied to individual wheels depending on which direction the car is off course.
If the vehicle starts to travel in a path that does not match the direction or angle of your steering wheel, then the DSC will quickly apply the appropriate wheel brakes to recover and put you back on a straight line. It detects what direction angle you are pointing the steering wheel and feeds that information to the DSC. Toilet Duck Original Poster 1, posts months. Hello, Poodling along in my E46 M3 convertible today when I heard a warning beep. Looked down and the traction control had deactivated the yellow triangle warning thing was displaying on the instrument cluster. Also, where the red handbrake icon is normally displayed when the handbrake is on, was a yellow version of the same icon.
Tried pressing the traction control button but could not activate it, turning the car off and on didn't cure it either. However, after parking up for a few hours and getting back in, everything was back to normal until I got a few miles into my journey.
After that, both warning lamps were back on. Is it likely to be an ABS sensor? Many thanks in advance for any help! I'm pretty sure my did something like this.

A hydraulic pump, powered by the engine accessory belt, forces steering fluid into hoses leading to pistons in the steering rack. A hydraulic valve in the steering rack varies the hydraulic fluid pressure in the two cylinders, dependent on how fast or forcefully the pinion gear is rotated.
This multiplies the driver's force in steering the wheels. The steering column connects the steering wheel to the steering rack.
It has bearings and joints that can fail. Causing grinding or rattle sounds. If you suspect the steering column is making noise, detach the steering shaft. Then check if the noise is still present.
